What is Bridge Through Sport (BTS)?
Bridge Through Sport (BTS) is a youth program created through a partnership between the Musqueam Indian Band and the University of British Columbia (UBC). It uses sport, education, and mentorship to support the development of Musqueam youth while building meaningful connections to the university environment.
Who is the program for?
BTS is designed for Musqueam youth of various age groups, with programming tailored for both younger children and teens.
Where does the program take place?
Programming takes place in the Youth Centre for after school programs, various Musqueam community spaces, and on the UBC campus through field trips and activities.
Is BTS only focused on sports?
No. While sport is a key part of the program, BTS also includes academic support, mentorship, leadership development, and cultural connection.
What are the benefits of having my child participate in BTS?
BTS supports youth in building confidence, improving academic engagement, staying active, and developing strong relationships with mentors and peers in a supportive environment.
Is the program supervised?
Yes. All programming is led by trained staff, including UBC students and community mentors, who provide guidance, supervision, and support.
What departments does BTS collaborate with?
BTS programming collaborates closely with Musqueam Recreation and Health departments to deliver programming. We use the Youth Centre as a base for our programming.
What does a typical day or session look like?
Most sessions include a check-in and snack, educational activities such as homework support or learning projects, and physical activity like sports or games—see What a typical program session looks like.
How does BTS support education?
The program offers structured academic activities and engagement through clubs, including the Homework Club, Reading Club, and Math & Science Club, each of which helps youth build skills and confidence in school. It also provides field trips to the UBC campus throughout the year to get them further engaged in learning.
Besides educational supports, what other activities are there?
BTS offers seasonal activities such as swimming, snowboarding, and outdoor recreation, as well as field trips to locations across UBC.
What kinds of activities will I get to do?
You’ll get to participate in sports, games, field trips, art activities, and hands-on learning like science experiments or creative projects.
Do I have to be good at sports to join?
Not at all. The program is about trying new things, having fun, and building confidence, everyone is welcome regardless of skill level.
Will I get to visit UBC?
Yes. Many activities include visits to UBC facilities like gyms, museums, labs, and other spaces so you can explore the campus.
Can I have a say in what we do?
Yes. Youth input is encouraged, and programs often adapt based on interests and feedback.
Can students apply for more than one position?
Yes. You are welcome to apply for as many positions as you’re interested in. Note that programming days will be adjusted to fit the availability of the successful applicant.
Can student volunteers get involved?
Yes. UBC students are encouraged to participate as mentors and program leaders. This is great way to gain valuable leadership and community experience.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
